Vision Restored - Degenerative Conditions

Have you been diagnosed with a degenerative corneal condition such as Keratoconus or Pellucid Marginal Degeneration? These progressive, non-inflammatory degenerative conditions, affect the underlying structure of the cornea. The cornea is the clear dome of tissue responsible for refracting the majority of the light entering the eye. Early in these conditions, eyeglasses or standard contact lenses can correct the visual dysfunction. However, as these conditions progress, vision correction becomes increasingly more difficult to provide through conventional means. Simple activities like driving, watching television or movies, or reading the newspaper, can become nearly impossible. Due to the corneal structural changes, vision can be significantly impacted due to increasing myopia and irregular astigmatism. Keratoconus

Spectacles Eyeglasses have certain design and manufacturing limitations which prevent proper optical correction of these conditions. Standard contact lenses also suffer from some of these restrictions but with special rigid lens designs, the optical distortions have traditionally been fairly well managed. The problems with even these special rigid lens designs have been more centered around the fitting relationships of the lenses and the cornea. These problems have ranged from lenses that just "pop off" the eye to physiological stress induced to the cornea. These stresses come from the physical mechanics of the interaction of the irregular cornea with the regular contact lens and can cause permanent scarring. Historically, when the condition progresses to a point that contact lenses are no longer adequately addressing the problem, a surgical procedure, a corneal transplant would be performed. This is needed in less than 10% of cases, and in this procedure, healthy donor cornea is used to replace the keratoconus cornea.

Although corneal transplants are the most successful of all organ transplants, the vision is generally irregular. Specialized contact lenses are again used to bring back useful vision to the individual. Since contact lenses are an integral part of medical management of these types of conditions, the quest for a "better" contact lens has continued. Those affected with these conditions can appreciate a certain level of frustration in achieving comfortable, healthy contact lens wear that provides good vision. We are now at a new frontier in contact lens design and manufacture. Find out more about Z-Wave below. Pot Of Gold
